W8-BEN what the *!**!* is that?

By ShowMeTheMoney | October 2, 2006

If you are not a US based affiliate and have ever signed up with an affiliate network based in the states then you will probably have come across the dreaded W8-BEN form. Your affiliate network is required by the nice US IRS to hold back 30% of your payments if you dont have one of these on file. Yes Really! Basically it certifies you are exempt from paying US Tax because you are a foreigner.  I use to think forms from the UK’s inland revenue were pretty bad but they dont have anything on the IRS who are truly masters at the art of double speak and form filling confusion…I can only pity those filling in a W8-BEN who dont have engish as a first language…..
