Resale Rights Summary

By ShowMeTheMoney | March 12, 2007

I had a couple of emails from the blog post the other day about Resale Rights. I must admit I wasnt entirely clear (even to myself!) on the different kind of resale rights you will find with downloaded info products. So I have prepared a little summary below:-

(1) Personal Use. As the name suggests this is the Personal Use rights you get when buy software or an Ebook. The product cant be resold.

(2) Giveaway Rights. A popular type of rights used a lot for free reports. Basically you can give the product away as a lead generator or as a gift but you cant charge for it.

(3) Resale Rights. This is the type of rights you will see most in the resale business. You can take the product and resell it and keep all the profits from the sales. However you cant pass the resale rights on to those you sell the product to.

(4) Full Master Resale Rights. You can sell the product and keep all the profit and your customers can also sell the product. A product with Full Master Resale rights will often come with a ready made html sales page.

(5) Private Label Resale (PLR) Rights. These rights allow you to alter the product to add your name and branding so it looks like you authored it and basically claim ownership of it. This means the rights are usually a lot more expensive than the others. The rights may give you permission to alter the actual content as well. Usually you dont get to claim copyright over the end product but PLR rights can vary a great deal between products. You really do need to check up on the rights accompanying your PLR product to ensure you dont do anything with it you shouldnt!

You will see various variations of the above. There is usually a rights file with the product that explains exactly what you can and cant do. As a first call you should always consult this. If in doubt contact the products author!
