Firefox - The Internet Marketers best friend?

By ShowMeTheMoney | May 14, 2007

I must admit in the past  I have tended to stick to using MS Internet Explorer  as my standard browser. Version 7.0 is a vast improvemnt over the previous versions and usually  Id only kick off Firefox when I need to check that my websites were displaying ok in both types of browser.

However if youre already a  Firefox fan you will have come to realise one of its most useful features  is the sheer amount of 3rd party plug-ins now available. One Firefox plug-in that has made me break my MS Internet Explorer habit is Search Status.

For doing Internet Marketing research Search Status  is extremely handy. With a couple of clicks you can see any sites Google PageRank, Google Category, Alexa popularity ranking, Alexa incoming links, Alexa related links and backward links from Google, Yahoo and MSN. Another handy feature is that it can highlight no-follow links on a webpage. Ive been using this feature to check on  the link flow on my sites so I can try and focus search engine ranking to particular pages rather than having pages like Contacts and Privacy Policy getting useless Google page rank!

Is Portal Feeder the best thing since sliced bread?

By ShowMeTheMoney | May 9, 2007

Just spent a productive couple of days putting together some sites with Portal Feeder (or PF for short). I have been a member of PF since its launch back in Dec 2005. In the last couple of weeks membership was reopened for a short period then closed again. If you missed out then I feel sorry for you :-) Truly, its the best software/training site I’ve been a member of and the only one I have kept my subscription to. If you are at all familiar with Stompernet, then portal feeder can be thought of as the other side of the coin, the software that drives your site building and promotion. Although to do it justice there is so much more to PF than just the software. It encompasses everything from the building the site to ongoing promotion. In fact I am kicking myself I didnt get my act together and promote it as an affiliate for the brief period it was opened up for membership again. Basically there are only so many things I can work on at once and not everything gets done, at least if I dont get around to outsourcing it either! Which brings me neatly back to Portal feeder. This thing has the potential to save me so much time in building, maintaining and promoting my sites. If the thing ever opens up again then get yourself a membership. It will help build you an internet business not just a hobby! www.portalfeeder.com (And no thats not an affiliate link!)

Its a must read as is his new blog.

Anyone for a Cloud Clout?

By ShowMeTheMoney | April 26, 2007

A great site for internet trend spotters can be found at Trendwatching. For marketers its an interesting resource that gives some thoughts on future consumer trends. Just at the moment they are featuring  Cloud Clout, basically the power of groups to get what they want. Like minded consumers banding together to exert some influence on things ranging from discounts for bulk purchases to changes in product specs! If you think back a couple of years this is an idea that surfaced and then pretty much withered away as there just wasnt a critical mass of internet users at that time. Maybe with the continued growth in the internet its time has come. Anyway its a good read  about the new rash of websites catering for this trend, check it out.

When the next big thing is just so Whatever!

By ShowMeTheMoney | April 10, 2007

Have you actually truly seen anything revolutionary on the internet marketing front recently? Is it just me or does the next big thing email pop into your  inbox with relentless monotony?

Just recently I have seen some well know marketers totally over milking their email list with a sucession of dreary offers.  Chris from Projectx is a case in point. He is always working on something that is going to turn internet marketing on its head. Yeah, whatever! Now I did love his last two products, hell I even promoted them,  maybe I am jaded but like most things the next big thing is usually just a rehash of stuff that if you really thought about it you already knew. Maybe its a new take on putting it into practice but its not truly revolutionary. The trouble is the sales copy is usually so good it sells like hot cakes to those trying to break into internet marketing for the first time. How many of these products that you have shelled out for have you truly made use off?…… yeah, thats what I thought :-). Its time we were all a hell of a lot more cynical.

I am trying to think back to when I was last genuinely excited about a new internet marketing product. Sad to say its probably over three years ago with the release of John Reeses Traffic Secrets. And yes I know the original is on sale again in the lead up to him revamping it, and no I am not pushing it to you! Tsk so cynical.

The best marketers do not exploit their customers by bombarding  them with an endless stream of  rehashed product offers.  We will be lucky if we see anything truly interesting this year but my bet is it will be a runner from the likes of John Reese rather than from the ProjectX stables

I have been away for a few days in the hills of Mid Wales so not many updates recently. I did have my laptop with me but it was for watching DVD’s only :-), didnt even look at my email. Actually its amazing how many of even the smallest valleys have good mobile coverage these days so you cant escape except by turning the gadgets off!

Learn from your failure?

By ShowMeTheMoney | March 21, 2007

A couple of weeks ago I think I mentioned we had been trying out a few ideas with co-registration. We had a couple of campaigns set up and eventually ran a test with one we thought (after a hell of a lot of research) had good potential. I have to say to date the results have been pretty mixed. Dont get me wrong I think its a great way to build a long term list in some markets, maybe just not the one we selected!  So some disappointments but at least we gave it a try and I am pretty sure we will be revisiting this again soon. I did learn a lot about autoresponders, whitelist, blacklists and SPF records and a hell of a lot more I probably didnt really want to know. We also had some fail safes set up so that we didnt burn through a lot of cash testing campaigns that werent performing.

Its easy to get discouraged when a project doesnt work out but in this business Ive learned that only about 1 in 20 projects every makes any money! Its  easy enough to be an arm chair critic / cynic but to ever make any money you need to at least take action on something, anything! Just do it!…….  :-)

Squidoo - Another Internet Marketing Opportunity?

By ShowMeTheMoney | March 15, 2007

Its hard to keep up with the number of new sites that get associated with the Web2.0 tag. Many will probably vanish without trace others will become as popular as MySpace or YouTube. I must confess I had never heard of Squidoo until another marketer mentioned that he was getting some good traffic from content he had put together on the site. You know Internet Marketing is basically a numbers game right? In particular Traffic numbers. Places like MySpace, YouTube and Squidoo all present oportunities to get more traffic to our sites. I am not going to explain the ins and outs of Squidoo but if you head on over there you can see the marketing potential for yourself.

Resale Rights Summary

By ShowMeTheMoney | March 12, 2007

I had a couple of emails from the blog post the other day about Resale Rights. I must admit I wasnt entirely clear (even to myself!) on the different kind of resale rights you will find with downloaded info products. So I have prepared a little summary below:-

(1) Personal Use. As the name suggests this is the Personal Use rights you get when buy software or an Ebook. The product cant be resold.

(2) Giveaway Rights. A popular type of rights used a lot for free reports. Basically you can give the product away as a lead generator or as a gift but you cant charge for it.

(3) Resale Rights. This is the type of rights you will see most in the resale business. You can take the product and resell it and keep all the profits from the sales. However you cant pass the resale rights on to those you sell the product to.

(4) Full Master Resale Rights. You can sell the product and keep all the profit and your customers can also sell the product. A product with Full Master Resale rights will often come with a ready made html sales page.

(5) Private Label Resale (PLR) Rights. These rights allow you to alter the product to add your name and branding so it looks like you authored it and basically claim ownership of it. This means the rights are usually a lot more expensive than the others. The rights may give you permission to alter the actual content as well. Usually you dont get to claim copyright over the end product but PLR rights can vary a great deal between products. You really do need to check up on the rights accompanying your PLR product to ensure you dont do anything with it you shouldnt!

You will see various variations of the above. There is usually a rights file with the product that explains exactly what you can and cant do. As a first call you should always consult this. If in doubt contact the products author!
